The White House defended its decision to revoke access for CNN, MS Now, and Politico, arguing that press credentials are a privilege, not a constitutional guarantee. Officials said the outlets were removed after “years of false reporting,” adding that the First Amendment protects publication but does not ensure a seat in the briefing room or a place in the press pool.

The administration framed the move as consistent with past precedents, pointing to multiple instances in which prior Democratic administrations restricted or penalized media organizations. Examples cited include the Obama White House’s clashes with Fox News, Justice Department surveillance of reporters, and credentialing disputes involving the Associated Press, the Boston Herald, and the San Francisco Chronicle. The statement also accused the Biden administration of limiting access for hundreds of journalists through revised credentialing rules.
The release argues that mainstream outlets have operated more like political actors than neutral watchdogs, citing data showing overwhelmingly negative coverage of Trump compared to more favorable reporting during Biden’s early term. It concludes that no president is obligated to host “a hostile operation” on White House grounds and asserts that President Trump is enforcing long‑standing norms regarding press access.
