Portrait Unveiling: A Tribute to Public Service and Resilience

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FL (July 28, 2026) – A portrait on loan of Miami-Dade County Supervisor of Elections Alina Garcia, created by acclaimed Cuban American artist Meivel L. Hernández, was unveiled during a special ceremony at Elections Headquarters in Doral this Tuesday, July 28, at 10:30 a.m. The portrait is displayed prominently in the lobby of the building, where it will serve as a lasting tribute to public service, perseverance, and the enduring promise of the American Dream.

“I am deeply humbled and honored by this extraordinary gesture,” said Supervisor Garcia. “An official portrait was never something I sought. But after learning of the inspiration behind Meivel’s work and the deeply personal story that shaped it, I accepted her generous offer to place it on loan at Elections Headquarters—not for myself, but in recognition of the countless women who escaped communism and tyranny to build better lives in the United States through faith, perseverance, and hard work. I hope that everyone who sees this portrait, especially young girls, will be reminded that there is no limit to what they can accomplish in this great nation, and that public service remains one of the highest callings.”

“The inspiration for this portrait is deeply rooted in our shared history,” shared Hernández. “As I learned more about Alina Garcia’s life and journey, I felt an immediate emotional connection that became the foundation of my creative process. Over several weeks, I poured my heart into every brushstroke, weaving together my own memories, experiences, and artistic voice. Through my cubist style, I sought to capture not only her likeness, but also her strength, resilience, and unwavering commitment to serving others. More than a portrait, this work is a reflection of perseverance, sacrifice, and hope.”

Born in Guantánamo, Cuba, Hernández draws inspiration from a life shaped by resilience, faith, family, and the rich cultural influences of South Florida. Following a life-changing workplace accident that left her disabled, painting became more than an artistic pursuit—it became a path toward healing and renewal. Her distinctive style blends bold colors, geometric forms, and cubist influences to explore memory, identity, and the immigrant experience. Rather than painting subjects exactly as they appear, Hernández portrays them as they are remembered and felt, creating works that are both deeply personal and universally resonant.

“This unveiling also comes at a meaningful moment in time,” added Supervisor Garcia. “As our nation continues commemorating the 250th anniversary of American independence and our office prepares to administer the August 18 Primary Election and the November 3 General Election, this portrait serves as a reminder that democracy is sustained by ordinary people who choose to serve something greater than themselves. I am profoundly grateful to Meivel for this beautiful and deeply moving gesture.”
